They focus too much on rigor and forget the fun. Or they lean too hard on fun and end up with messy, unusable data. The secret isn’t choosing one over the other. It’s weaving them together.

Start with a clear, simple question

Every successful program begins with one question that anyone can understand. Not: "What is the correlation between atmospheric particulate matter and nocturnal insect activity?" That’s jargon. Instead: "Are fireflies disappearing from your backyard?" or "Has the first frost come earlier this year than last?"

Let the program evolve

The most sustainable programs aren’t rigid. They’re responsive.
